Identity Theft Risk in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Taxpayers Victims of “Computer Glitch”
Just in…
Wisconsin has mailed tax forms to taxpayers with Social Security Numbers printed on the outside of the envelope. The danger of SSNs falling into the hands of identity theft thieves is that so many private records are keyed to SSNs. With the SSN and a few other pieces of information, thieves might be able to get to your bank, credit card and other records.
If you are a Wisconsin taxpayer, get to you mailbox before thieves has a chance to. This news was on CNN this morning and will make its way to identity theft thieves quickly. If you filed the standard form last year, and you don’t receive the form, it’s best to assume that your private information is in the hands of thieves. To protect your identity and prevent theft, at a minimum, notify your bank and credit card companies. The bank and credit card companies will not take any action to protect you.
If you are using your SSN for your security question for any online banking, credit card or financial websites, change it. Use something that thieves will not be able to guess. Assume that they have your family birth dates. Use something unique.
